It is also with great pleasure that we announce the keynote lecture for this year’s meeting. It will be given by Emeritus Professor Peter Cryle (The University of Queensland) on “The Impact of the Franco-Prussian War on Physical Anthropology as a Science: Dealing with Racism in the Science of Race.”

The conference dinner will take place on September 1 in the evening in Villa Tomasa in Kreuzberg, which is close (walking distance) to the University (find on google maps here). Location

Sigmund Freud University is located centrally in Berlin at the former airport Tempelhof, close to the Subway station “Platz der Luftbrücke” (Subway no 6/ or “U6”). You can find the location on google maps via this link. Coming from Platz der Luftbrücke, you need to enter the site of the airport from Columbiadamm. You will find the university walking diagonally to the left straight across the parking lot.

Travel

Berlin is easily accessible via train, airplane (via the airport BER at the southeast of the city) or car. Parking spaces are available in front of the building. We recommend using public transport, which usually operates very reliably in the city.

For June, July and August, Germany introduced a special ticket which allows travelers to use all public transportation in Germany apart from distant trains for 9€ per month. You can buy this special ticket on all vending machines of the Sbahn (Deutsche Bahn) and Ubahn (BVG) in Berlin.

Regularly, a weekly ticket for the Berlin public transport company (BVG) costs 36€, a single ticket (one way) 3€ for adults. In addition, there is a wide range of vehicles available for short-term rent, such as bikes, scooters or e-scooters.

Accommodation

We recommend to look for accommodation close to the university in districts such as Kreuzberg, Tempelhof, Mitte or Neukölln. The SFU is close to the “Platz der Luftbrücke” (see above), where the subway line no. 6 (U6) stops. Any accommodation that is close to this subway line will give you an easy ride to the conference site. This might help you keeping the journey as short as possible. The following hotels are close to the SFU:

  • Hotel Mercure Berlin Tempelhof [Book here] is only about 20 mins away from the SFU with public transport. As of July 30, standard rooms are already booked out, but double-bed apartments and higher-priced rooms should still be available.
  • Hotel Cinderella in Mehringdamm 57. This Hotel is very close to the University (walking distance), prices range from 100-130€/night. This hotel has only 12 rooms, so early booking is advised [Book here]
  • Hotel Columbia is very close to the conference site (walking range), single rooms cost about 90€ per night
  • The Youth Hostel “Metropol Hostel Berlin Mitte” is also very close to the conference site and offers a wide range of housing options, from single rooms to multi-bed dorms [Book here]
  • Along the subway no. 6 (U6), there are also quite a few hotels, especially around Friedrichstraße and Oranienburger Tor, such as Generator Hostel Berlin Mitte, Meininger Hotel “Humboldthaus”, or Heart of Gold Hostel Berlin

For cheaper accommodation, we recommend booking rooms via AirBnB. Also, the conference team is trying to bring together participants who are willing to share their rooms. If you are interested, please contact the organizers at eshhs2022@gmail.com

As of Saturday, June 11, 2022, all COVID-19 entry restrictions to Germany were provisionally lifted. From this date, entries to Germany are permitted for all travel purposes (including tourism and visiting trips). For the most current updates on traveling, please also refer to the homepage of the Federal Foreign Office.

Stay tuned! Further information about the upcoming conference will be published here regularly. If you have any questions about the conference, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us via eshhs2022@gmail.com
